To study the above, various methods are followed. Like questionnaires, surveys, self reporting etc. Basically one needs to be aware of the mechanisms used to measure ethnic identity, cultural acculturation and psychological mind sets of the ethnic people. In most of the cases it depends upon what information the researchers are seeking. If they are looking at feelings of individuals towards other members of their ethnic group, interviews would be a good way to do it. Thus specific individual views can be noted down. If the researchers are looking at some specific behaviors then questionnaires can be a good way of doing it. This would definitely take lesser time and involves minimum labor.
In most cases the point of discussion should be clearly spelt out to the individuals providing the information. Thus if you want to know the effect of socialization of one ethnic group with the society they are resident in, you need to clearly specify what socialization means here. For some it could just mean interacting with coworkers and for others it could just mean dating and going out with people of the other cultures.
Thus, the limitations of personal interviews are overcome by other methods like Q-sort technique and socio-metric task. In Q-sort technique each question is given a score depending on the characteristic of the ethnic group. Thus it is a good measure of how well the characteristic is determined. It was used in ethnic identity and ethnic culture orientation studies. The socio-metric task is another method which interviews children and adolescents of the ethnic groups. This assessment method is also found good because it gives a relative position of the individual with respect to his/her cultural orientations. To capture the emotional aspects of the above three factors, the facial expressions of individuals can also be captured and analyzed later on.
Though a lot of work has been done by researchers till date, we are yet to see better methods which would give us more clues on the complex questions related to cultural background of ethnic groups.
